Teaching the Next Generation of Innovators
STEM, innovation, 1:1 technology, creativity, and 21st century skills shouldn’t just be buzzwords in your district. Learn how one district started building all of these skills in classrooms across the district. Through a mix of STEM kits, PBL units, PLTW lessons, iPads, and Chromebooks, Center Grove Community School Corporation has found a variety of ways to foster creativity and innovation in today’s classrooms. Come connect with four members of Center Grove's Connected Learners Team and discuss how these best practices can be planned and implemented in your own district.

From Zero to Sixty with Seesaw in One Year
At the 2016 Innovation Summit in San Diego, ten teachers and administrators from Goleta Union School District first heard about Seesaw, a student-driven digital portfolio. By the end of the school year, over a dozen teachers in the district were using it. By the beginning of this school year, Seesaw was adopted district-wide as a "must-do." In this session, you'll hear why the district embraced Seesaw so heartily and some of the many ways in which students and teachers are using it.

Merging Classrooms (Egypt and New Hampshire) — Walking the Talk of Global Citizenship
The goal was to connect students across the world, share ideas, and root the course’s curriculum in real-world events. A shared class of 26 students from Egypt’s Schutz American School and Proctor Academy engaged in asynchronous (and occasionally live) discussions about culture, current events, and politics. Students connected and shared about what’s happening in the world and what it’s like to be a teenager in each country. From welcome videos shared on YouTube and cross-Atlantic partners on research papers to an in person, face-to-face, gathering and discussion at the end of the term — these students experienced what it means to connect, work rigorously and exchange cross-culturally. Not least of which, genuine friendships were made and plans for future gatherings established. At the end of the term, students asked…”How can we build on this? We are so much more alike than I realized!” In this session, I will unpack the whole process — brainstorming, assignment creation, class structure, feedback loops, etc. and all the Edtech tools that supported our work. As a full year high school elective course, it was a wild and joyful ride full of challenges and highlights. As a lifelong learner, I was thrilled to co-create our curriculum and approach right alongside my students. We made a ton of mistakes that I am really proud of! And oh yeah -- all this amazing student-directed and motivated learning happened without the traditional system of handing out numerical grades on student work and effort! You’ll leave the session inspired by a real-world example of global citizenship learning in action — and be challenged to bring these types of learning opportunities to your school. Getting Personal: OER Curation
Content is key when it comes to succeeding in implementing a blended learning classroom. The right online text, video or multimedia clip guides self-directed student learning. However, curating is an art. As teachers begin integrating resources into their blended learning courses, the art of curation, especially Open Educational Resources, can make the difference between an excellent, interactive lesson and the equivalent of a digital worksheet. Expert curation means knowing the criteria and strategies for aggregating, sifting, and selecting the best resources. Open Educational Resources are not free if you pay a service to aggregate for you - nor are they personalized. Learn the strategies to maximize the use of free, online content - and then hire your Library Media Specialist to help support you.
