Youth Documentary Filmmaking: Latest Research and Newest Practices
In this hands-on, minds-on presentation, participants will learn how recent shifts and turns in the converging fields of education, technology and transnational filmmaking have brought us to an exciting moment in youth and media culture. As educators strive to build critical and creative thinkers for the 21st century, 'citizen documentary-filmmaking' in the classroom is an incredible opportunity to create with their peers in both in face-to-face and online classrooms. Documentary filmmaking classroom provides rich opportunities for problem-based learning about real world matters using collaboration and innovation. Making a short citizen documentary is now within the reach and ability of educators and youth who want to create change and have a say in their world. Moreover, it is not limited to media arts or tech classes; students are making films in many subject areas including history, geography, science and civics, to name only a few. This session will provide participants with inside tips and skills to navigate and access free public domain and creative commons media including music, videos, stills and more, from a seasoned documentary film educator. Participants will be taken through workflow suggestions using Google Apps to store media and collaborate with peers during the production process. Those using mobile devices during the session can do this simultaneously with the presenter. We will share suggestions and tips on how to get started on some of the newest collaborative video editing platforms on the internet today using mobile devices such as ipads, iphones and laptops. As a take-away, participants will be provided with information and internet links shared during the session.

Makerfication is a look into how gamification and the maker movement can together help enhance engagement in the classroom and increase excitement in PBL. In the spirit of making, the audience will be divided into teams and given a challenge to make something collaboratively with the given set of rules, while also scoring as many points as possible. Getting Personal: OER Curation
Content is key when it comes to succeeding in implementing a blended learning classroom. The right online text, video or multimedia clip guides self-directed student learning. However, curating is an art. As teachers begin integrating resources into their blended learning courses, the art of curation, especially Open Educational Resources, can make the difference between an excellent, interactive lesson and the equivalent of a digital worksheet. Expert curation means knowing the criteria and strategies for aggregating, sifting, and selecting the best resources. Open Educational Resources are not free if you pay a service to aggregate for you - nor are they personalized. Learn the strategies to maximize the use of free, online content - and then hire your Library Media Specialist to help support you.
